Research & Insights
User Insights
- 65% of users preferred a guided shopping experience over browsing a catalog
- 72% found it difficult to compare product combinations
- Users valued customization but didn’t want a complicated process
We developed two key personas to guide design decisions. By anchoring the configurator experience around these personas, we ensured the product journey felt relevant, efficient and engaging for distinct user needs.

The Hybrid Professional
A remote worker who's often on-the-go and splits time between home and office. Values productivity, comfort and portability. Often unsure which tools are optimized for hybrid work.

The Creative Power User
Designers, developers or gamers who care deeply about performance and aesthetics. Knows what they want but appreciates curated, compatible product suggestions.
Competitive Analysis
We examined configurators from Warby Parker, Dell and Herman Miller to identify best practices in:
- Simplified step-by-step recommendations
- Clear product benefits and comparisons
- Visual previews of the final configuration
and we were able to gather some interesting insights:
- Users tend to be skeptical about whether product questionnaires (especially on brand websites) will recommend products that are right for them
- When each product on the results page has an explanation for why it was recommended that connects directly to questionnaire answers users feel confident that the products are tailored to their needs
- The simple, playful design of the Warby Parker and Herman Miller quizzes was engaging to users
- Users liked having the option of comparing two products side by side on the results page
- One competitor's drag and drop feature was confusing to every user who was exposed to it
